We had passed the place occasionally on our way to Arume, or further on to Carrer Blanquerna with its many bars and eateries. While I always puzzled about the name I had liked the tasty pintxos and the stylish, yet comfortable atmosphere right away. Buscando el Norte opened its doors about three years ago and soon became a popular hangout for locals and travelers alike.

And it’s much more than just pintxos. Chef and owner Gastón Macchion loves to reinvent traditional recipes in his fusion kitchen – the result is a selection of delicious Mediterranean dishes. Soups and salads, raciones to share as starters or as a main course just for yourself, plus a small choice of deserts, that shouldn’t be missed. Among my favorites are ceviche (time and again), tuna tartar with avocado, sea bass and risotto, and mussels in red curry. Gastón focuses on fresh fish and seafood, but there is also chicken and Angus beef on the menu. And there is a lot more to discover. Next to the great food, it’s the ambience at Buscando el Norte that I love. The checkered tiles, open limestone walls and shelves that are decorated with carefully chosen vintage objects make for a fancy retro-chic. Depending on the season, you can also sit at one of the few tables on the sidewalk.
