On the boardwalk, down by the sea: Es Passeig, Port Sóller

Es Passeig wonderfully combines a great kitchen and a spectacular view with an authentic 50s-style beach atmosphere. Well, what I for one imagine small Mediterranean towns on the coast looked like back then. Port Sóller is one of this sleeping beauties that comes to life in summer, when families taking over the promenade and single travelers fleeing the nordic regions of Europe discover places like this.

It’s no surprise that many guests know Marcel and Yvonne Battenberg personally, or that they are regulars in their restaurant – they are wonderful hosts and make you wish to return. Enjoy your lunch or dinner on the terrace or in the middle of the boardwalk, close to the beach. The menu varies from small tapas to a lovely fusion of Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. For a light and fancy lunch with a friend, un metro de Tapas is a real treat, for your eyes and also for your palate. If you don’t know what you are up to, go for the menú degustación sorpresa – always a wonderful surprise, the chef’s choice of his favorite four dishes. No matter what kind of menu you choose, don’t miss one of the spectacular deserts.

Unlike Mallorcan restaurants, Es Passeig opens its kitchen quite early. If it’s warm enough to sit outside, make sure to make a reservation – the tables, carefully decorated with fresh lemons, are often fully booked. In mid-July, Port Sóller celebrates Vigília de Nostra Senyora del Carme: All electric lights go down and the seaside is lit by torches only when illuminated boats silently glide through the bay. Enjoy the beautiful procession with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee after your dinner at Es Passeig.
