El Taller de Gaudeix: Just Enjoy!

The location is new but the kitchen unmistakably bears the signature of Maria Moreno. Her new eatery is called El Taller de Gaudeix. And for a reason, because it’s rather a restaurant and workshop than a tapas bar. With floor-to-ceiling windows, an open kitchen, and the opportunity to look over the chef’s shoulder. And even to cook with her, every now and then.

When Bodega Gaudeix had to close on noble Carrer Sant Feliu at the end of last year many regulars were sad. So I was all the more curious when Maria’s new project near Carrer Blanquerna took shape. Some of the former Gaudeix’ pinchos and signature dishes also made it onto the new menu.

We started our lunch with delicious mini hamburgers and a wonderful zucchini salad, with strips of zucchini draped like spaghetti in a bed of lettuce and herbs. The solomillo with mushrooms tasted like the essence of autumn on Mallorca. And the Goxua for dessert took us on a side trip to the Basque Country. With a base of whipped cream, a layer of sponge and another layer of caramelized custard it’s kind of a combination of Creme Catalana and Tiramisu.

Unlike before, Gaudeix now focuses on breakfast and lunch. And it blends into the Blanquerna neighborhood. I’m sure it won’t be long until the fans of Maria’s cuisine find their way to the new location. To a place at one of the large windows overlooking the street, at the bar next to the open kitchen, or on the covered veranda. In any case, the name of the restaurant remains program: Gaudeix translates into ‘enjoy’.
