Tonight’s the night. Actually, it is the first out of three. Palma’s art night 2019, the Nit de l’Art ’19, has started with a couple of exciting openings. Xavier Fiol’s gallery is sparsely decorated with a series of outlined heads by Fernando Megias. What already attracts curious art lovers is the background for a dialogue between artist and visitors. 

At Rialto Living Joan Aguiló is presenting “Estiu – Summer”, a series of canvasses in bright colors inspired by his own childhood. A diverse crowd celebrates the late summer and the street artist who started his work in the old town of Palma. Es Baluard shows a fabulous collection of young artists who live and work on Mallorca. People were queuing at Palma’s famous museum of contemporary art for the opening of “On rau la realitat? Where does reality reside?”. 

Wherever you go there are pre-openings, parties and receptions, snacks and chatting. And while galleries and museums are regular participants, this year a couple of bars, stores and hotels join the Nit de l’Art ’19 with their own exhibitions or live performances. I love to just stroll from one gallery to the next, discover art works and artists. The main events are scheduled for Saturday, 21 September. In case you cannot make it you don’t have to wait another year for the Nit de l’Art ’20. With Art Palma Brunch in March there is another great opportunity to get together, reconnect or discover the Mallorcan art scene. Henri Matisse once said that an artist is an explorer.
