Nit de l'Art

Two events in Palma attract art lovers from all over the world. The season starts with Art Palma Brunch in spring. But the highlight of the year is always the Nit de l’Art. Palma’s galleries have hosted this art night for more than twenty years. This time, however, the event follows a rather different schedule. The color of Modernism: Blau

September 6, 2020September 6, 2020
The color of Modernism

“Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do …”, Major Tom responds to Ground Control before he gets lost in space. Blue has been an alluring color at all times. From the blue flower of Romanticism to Blue Note Records. From Picasso’s Blue Period to the Blue Rider to Yves Klein’s Blue Monochrome. Consequently the current exhibition at the Caixa Forum in Palma is dedicated to the color Blue in Catalan Modernism. Blau is Catalan – and German, by the way – for blue. And the location of the…

Fire & Earth: Guillem Nadal in Berlin

Guillem Nadal Fire & Earth Berlin

Some of the narrow parallel lines that are winding across the canvasses remind me of topographic maps. Others resemble rice fields or the lines that waves draw on the sandy bottom of the sea. The artwork by Guillem Nadal is mostly abstract. But…

Open sesame: Las Puertas de Toledo

Las Puertas de Toledo

It’s that wonderful tale of 1001 Nights where Ali Baba’s greedy brother Kasim knows the entrance but forgot the key. In hotels today it often happens the other way round. We have the key but don’t remember the door to it. Something that Toni…

Winds of Mallorca There‘s an old Catalan song, Winds of Mallorca

There‘s an old Catalan song, Jota Marinera, that tells about the wife of a fisherman. She was always watching the wind. Because - if it came from the east or west, she did not have to worry about her husband. But if it came from another direction she knew it could be stormy and dangerous.
