You will recognize the traditional basket weaver store even if you have never been in this part of old town Palma, before. The shop looks like out of a picture book. All kinds of Mallorcan basketry hang next to the door and are arranged along the narrow entrance. Countless photos have been taken of this emblematic storefront with the unmistakable sign. Now, Mimbreria Vidal is celebrating its 100th anniversary, this year.

More Than Just a Store

If it comes to wickerwork, there is nothing you won’t find here. Baskets in all sizes, trunks, mats, hats, hammocks, and chairs. The store occupies the ground floor of an entire house with entrances to the streets on either side. There are lamp shades, animal heads, fly curtains and much more.

Objects that have been present in Mallorcan homes for decades. The Mimbreria is more than a store, actually. You can tell that José and Tomás Vidal really know about basketry. In case the wicker work of your vintage rocking chair or other furniture needs a repair, Mimbreria Vidal is one of the rare places that can handle the traditional craft.

Made on Mallorca

„One of our bestsellers is the senalla,“ Tomás points out. You see this typical bag everywhere on the island, on the market as well as on the beach. Made on Mallorca from the leaves of the palmito, an endemic dwarf palm. The genuine craft of basket weaving is kept alive by a few women who still master this now rare art.

Other products made from palmito leaves that customers ask for are small bird’s nests. „Birds seem to love them, and they make cute souvenirs“, says Tómas Vidal. As well as the animal masks that had almost disappeared from Balearic homes but became quite popular again, recently. Same goes for many of the emblematic stores in Palma.

100th Anniversary

The basketry was founded in 1925 and acquired by Tomás Vidal in 1955. Today, it’s his grandson Tomás who proudly continues the tradition. Supported by his father José who at the age of 83 still loves to give him a hand at the store and have a chat with the regulars.

In 2025, Mimbreria Vidal celebrates two anniversaries at the same time. 100 years of the emblematic store in Palma’s quarter of artisans and tradespeople that has been owned and run by the Vidal family for 70 years, now.
