It’s a short and easy yet rewarding walk. And while the kids will be delighted to explore the watchtower the adults love to take a break at the nearby café. The Castell de sa Punta de n’Amer is one of the lesser known castles on Mallorca. Located in a natural reserve between Cala Millor and Sa Coma, the historic defense tower is a popular excursion from Sant Llorenc.
A narrow path through pine forest and dunes leads you to the castle by the sea. Where the children feel like knights when they have to cross the drawbridge over the moat to enter the tower. Climb the dark and narrow staircase to the roof terrace. And marvel at the view, from the mountains to the open sea.
Eventful History
It’s not hard to imagine the time when the Castell de sa Punta de n’Amer was part of the island’s fortification system. Because in the eventful history of the Mediterranean there have often been pirates and invaders trying to set foot on Mallorca.
Completed in 1696, the tower served not only as a direct defense for the inhabitants of the east coast, but also as an observation and reporting tower. Unlike all other talaies (watchtowers), it was built as a square.
A Mystery to this Day
The peculiar combination of a pyramid and a castle tower remains a mystery to this day. A little museum in the tower shows a couple of documents and objects relating to the history of the castle. And there is a small collection of antique weapons.
After visiting the bastion, the Bar Es Castell next door with its large terrace is a great place for a coffee or a snack. Maybe you just stay a bit longer and enjoy the panorama. Regulars even love to play a game of backgammon or cards here. And forget about time, about the past as well as the future, and simply live in the moment.
