High above Port de Sóller, where the road bends sharply and the valley finally opens up, sits Mirador de ses Barques. It’s one of those spots that hikers and cyclists pass through almost by habit, a natural pause on the way up or down the mountain. Yet plenty of people also come here on purpose and settle in for a while. Because right at the lookout, there’s a restaurant. And once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand why so many visitors treat this stop as a destination in its own right.

A Menu Rooted in Mallorca
The kitchen keeps things close to home. Traditional cuina mallorquina runs through the menu, and a handful of seafood dishes round it out. Pa amb oli, or crispy croquettes make solid starters. From there, many guests move on to tumbet, or frito mallorquín, a hearty pan fried mix of offal, potatoes and peppers, one of the house specialties. And naturally, there’s paella. It usually comes for two or more elsewhere, but here you can order a small pan just for yourself.

Save Room for Dessert
Afterward, it’s worth saving a little room. The desserts are homemade, and the lemon tart in particular has real bite to it, while a classic tiramisu covers the more familiar cravings. For something more distinctly local, the granizado de almendra rounds off the meal with a flavor you won’t easily forget.

The View Steals the Show
But the food only tells half the story. The view does plenty of the talking too. From the terrace, the eye travels straight down to Port de Sóller, where the two lighthouses frame the bay’s near-perfect semicircle. Just past them, the Torre de Picada, one of the ancient watchtowers that surround the island, juts from the hillside. Looking like a tiny rook, forgotten by his player.

Turn north, and terraced olive groves ripple across the Tramuntana mountains for as far as you can see. There’s usually a breeze up here, and even when the air runs cool, the sun still finds your face. For those who prefer it a bit more quiet, a flight of steps leads down to a small terrace. With just a few tables set amongst greenery it’s way less busy down here.

A Hub for Hikers and Cyclists
Given the setting, it’s no surprise that the Sóller valley and the surrounding Tramuntana rank among the most popular areas on Mallorca for hiking and cycling. Trails and roads wind through the hills in every direction, and Mirador de ses Barques sits right in the middle of them. Some take a break here halfway through a longer route. Others make it their starting point, or the place where the day ends.

A Tasty Souvenir
Every so often, the restaurant sells Sóller oranges to take home, and the system runs entirely on trust. You weigh your own fruit, drop the right amount of coins into a bowl, and walk off with the citrus in hand. Squeeze them into juice once you’re back home, and you’ll have a small, tangy reminder of the view, the trail, and the meal that came with all of it. ![]()
