It’s a great place to see and be seen. On a Sunday afternoon, skaters and dancers, walkers and acrobats enjoy themselves in Palma’s Parc de la Mar. And lately, even sailors. Wait a minute, sailors in Parc de la Mar? Yes, indeed. Just recently, they started to set sail against the backdrop of the cathedral. Calling themselves Royal Palma Radio Control Yacht Club. 

They are sailing with model boats, but the requirements are similar to those of big sailboats. Beginning with the preparation of the boats which is even more challenging when the ropes are as thin as twine. And the tacking and jibing, according to the wind, calls for the correct sail trim.

The club is really taking off and every week new captains are turning up. But it’s also fascinating just to watch. Right now, somebody counts down and in no time single boats idling on the pond are moving into start position and the race begins. A dozen or more Dragon Force 65 and several other models are sailing close to the wind. At the turn it can get quite tight.

Meet like-minded people, have a drink, talk shop. And have fun together. In a nutshell, that’s the motto of the Royal Palma Radio Control Yacht Club. Via Facebook and WhatsApp the mariners arrange to get together every Sunday afternoon. And on Wednesday nights the regatta de blanc sails off into the sunset.
