Are they longing for something beyond the shimmering horizon, or are they keeping watch? The figures facing the bay of Palma might be guardians of an ancient coastline, or islanders drawn to the great unknown. The gentle tension between the poetic sculptures and the defensive layout of Castillo de San Carlos sets the tone for Joan Bennàssar’s Utopia. His distinctive works can be found in various locations across Mallorca. However, the scope of this exhibition, combined with its extraordinary setting, is truly unique.

Strength and Simplicity
Seen up close, Bennassàr’s figures balance strength and simplicity. The surfaces are textured, the shapes broad and grounded, giving them a presence that feels both timeless and down-to-earth. They stand like companions you meet along a walk across the terraces, ramparts, and pathways of the star-shaped fortress.

As you wander from one spot to the next, each sculpture offers a different view of the Castillo and the sea beyond. This interactive exhibition encourages visitors to explore at their own pace and discover their own meaning.

Rooted in the Character of Mallorca
Born in Pollença, Joan Bennàssar has long been one of Mallorca’s most recognizable artistic voices. Across decades of painting and sculpting he has developed a language of forms that feels rooted in the island’s character. And his commitment to bringing art into public life has made him an important figure in the cultural landscape.

The setting of the exhibition Utopia at Castillo de San Carlos adds depth without overshadowing the art. Built in the 17th century to defend the harbor of Palma, the peculiar fortress once played a central role in maritime protection. Today it houses the Military Museum of Mallorca and offers sweeping views across the bay.

Discover the Island’s Past and Present
With the sculptures positioned throughout the grounds, the site becomes even more engaging. And while Utopia remains a distant, imaginary place, the Castillo is where you can discover the island’s past and present in a very real way.

Joan Bennàssar’s Utopia is running through January 20, 2026. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00h to 14:00h. ![]()
