“Try this one“, within seconds, visitors at Mallorca Puzzles are twisting wooden cubes, trying to separate interlocked metal pieces, or turning intricate mechanisms over in their hands. Almost without noticing, they slip into a world of brain teasers, logic games, and tactile challenges. Meanwhile, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. Concentrated silence is occasionally broken by laughter or surprised exclamations. Strangers exchange ideas across the counter, and every solved puzzle inspires someone else to pick up the next challenge.

Every Puzzle Earns Its Place
The small shop in the heart of Palma is filled from floor to ceiling with puzzles, patience games, and mind-bending challenges, around 400 different ones, Sven Baeck explains. Nearly twenty years ago, he and his partner Gülcin opened Mallorca Puzzles, turning a shared passion into one of the city’s most unusual specialty stores. One principle has never changed: every puzzle has been tested by the two of them. “We don’t have any puzzles in the shop that we don’t personally like,” says Gülcin. Every recommendation, therefore, comes from genuine experience.

A Challenge for Every Mind
The collection spans an astonishing range. There are handcrafted wooden puzzles, clever metal disentanglement games, colorful plastic brain teasers, mathematical logic puzzles, Rubik’s Cubes, and even Rubik’s Pyramids. Some are ideal for children discovering patterns for the first time, while others keep seasoned puzzle lovers busy for hours. Some fit easily into a backpack for a trip, others deserve a permanent place on the kitchen table. Whether played alone, with a friend, or by the whole family, every puzzle offers a new way of thinking.

Simple Isn’t Easy
Appearances, however, can be wonderfully deceptive. One seemingly simple wooden puzzle featuring a small black square has become something of a legend in the shop. At first glance, it resembles Tangram, yet its objective is entirely different. Sven recalls families spending an entire long weekend trying to solve it. Without success. Then, not long ago, a young woman picked it up and solved it within minutes. Puzzles, it turns out, reward fresh perspectives rather than assumptions.

From Curious Kids to Serious Collectors
That unpredictability attracts an equally diverse crowd. Children and adults, first-time visitors, devoted regulars, and passionate collectors from around the world all stop by Mallorca Puzzles. For some, the joy lies less in finding the solution than in patiently exploring every possibility. The process, as much as the outcome, is part of the fun.

A Passion for Puzzle Boxes and Trick Locks
The fascination clearly runs in the family that has been in the toy business for well over a century. As a child, Sven spent countless Sundays in his parents’ store, trying out games and developing a fascination for puzzle boxes and trick locks that eventually became a lifelong passion. Today, he and Gülcin share that enthusiasm with their visitors. They explain how each puzzle works and make sure customers can get started at home. The one thing they never reveal, however, is the solution.

Sharing the Joy, Not the Solution
Mallorca Puzzles is also the kind of place where gift shopping becomes unexpectedly entertaining. Parents find presents for their children, children search for puzzles to surprise their parents, and many visitors leave with more than a souvenir. They take home a challenge that promises conversation, frustration, laughter, and, eventually, triumph. In doing so, they also experience the enduring truth behind Friedrich Schiller’s conviction that play is essential to what makes us human. Here, every puzzle rewards curiosity, patience, and the willingness to see familiar things from a different perspective. ![]()
