The barren landscape would make a great setting for a western movie. But actually this is a peaceful stretch of coast. And although I usually like to have nature to myself on my hikes, sometimes I thoroughly enjoy to meet like-minded people. Like here, on a Sunday walk with family or friends from S’Estanyol to Cala Pi. 

Indeed, it’s rather an easy walk than a hike. Along the beach of S’Estanyol and past ancient fishermen’s cottages. Soon you reach the S’Estalella lighthouse with a marvelous vista of the long white stretch of Es Trenc to one and the cliffs of Cala Pi to the other side. 

Further on, the path leads over a vast rocky plateau. The hinterland is shielded by dense twisted pine trees, which brace themselves against the constant sea wind or have been sculpted by it. At the same time there are blooming rock roses, genista and other harbingers of spring along the way. 

All the while you can see the Torre de S’Estalella. The historic watchtowers, then a smart communication system, form a ring around the whole island. You can’t climb this one but you can already see the next towers in Cala Pi and Cap Blanc. However, right now I only have eyes for the amazing turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. And can hardly wait to start the bathing season.

Following the well-marked path the coastline gets more and more spectacular. With steep abrupt cliffs, numerous caves and strange formations formed by the constant waves breaking against the rocks. Finally, you arrive at Cala Pi. And return along the same path, no less magnificent from the other perspective.
