Music, cheer and laughter echoes from the plaza through the streets of old town Palma. Where sunlight floods through the trees a diverse crowd is partying with live acts and dance. Palma’s first feminist bookshop is celebrating its first anniversary. Llibreria Pròpia offers a broad, by no means exclusively pink program not only on this festival weekend. 

Aldana Areca compiled an impressive selection of different genres in her beautiful book store. Llibreria Pròpia is all about women’s stories. Stories told by women, about women, gender issues, politics, and sexuality. Classic authors like Virginia Woolf or Simone de Beauvoir but also contemporary feminist fiction.

Most of the titles are in Catalan or Castilian but there’s also a section of English books. One of the most popular books at the moment is Lectura Fácil by Cristina Morales. In her award-winning novel, the author tells the story of four women declared “mentally handicapped” who rebel against state paternalism. No master, no god, no husband, no party, no football, says the cover. 

Aldana who studied philology is also the co-founder of the vine and vinyl store La Viniloteca. One year ago, she fulfilled a long-cherished wish and opened Llibreria Pròpia right next door. After moving the book store to beautiful Plaça Quadrado the first anniversary was also kind of an opening party of the new venue of Palma’s first feminist bookshop.
