Ropa y material de aventura, says the sign above the door, and I have always liked the term „adventure clothing“. For me Refugi de Muntanya is what a hardware store is for boys: a wonderful place where I discover things I wasn’t even looking for. Whether you are planning to cross the Tramuntana or the Alps, go tracking in Nepal or rock climbing in the Andes, this is your outfitter.

Martí Dols Suau has owned the store for two years and knows the island pretty much by heart. If you need any help or tips for your trip, he is an excellent adviser. A special kind of rope, snap-hook, bug spray, a means for waterproofing – Martí is likely to have it in store. Apart from clothes and gear the store specialises in maps, as well as guides and books about all kind of outdoor activities. Despite GPS and smart phones I will always love and rely on a proper map. When I was a child my father was the captain of a huge cargo ship and traveled the world. I traced him on the globe with my finger, trying to picture those places with exotic names like Port Limon, Fortaleza, Maracaibo, or Manila.

I haven’t become a sailor but I inherited my father’s passion for the sea. And added my own enthusiasm for the mountains, for cycling and hiking. Maybe that’s why I love trails that either start from or lead to the ocean, or at least offer sea views from the top of the mountains. Back down in the city Refugi de Muntanya is my urban hideaway and a great place to plan the next tour.
