From East to West: Las Olas

Yes, you are lucky if you got a table at Las Olas, in the narrow Carrer San Fortuny just below Santa Eulàlia. This small and quite unique restaurant offers a trip from East to West, and from past to present. The menu is truly extraordinary – you can choose between Mediterranean and Asian food. Take the opportunity and go for the Asian tapas, they are delicious. The two small guest rooms are mostly fully booked, so be sure to make a reservation.

The friendly couple who run Las Olas – John and Evelyne – have traveled the world for almost three decades, mainly by ship. Even if you wouldn’t know, you could take a safe guess by the beautiful photographs of lighthouses and other nautic things that create a lovely seafaring atmosphere. Have a look at the medieval map of the world on the ground floor: its original was drawn by Palmesanos who once lived in the nearby Jewish part of the Casco Antiguo, the old town of Palma.

The historic neighborhood also accounts for the wide variety of dishes estilo sefardo (Sephardic). And the reason why the Asian food is so authentic and tastes just awesome simply is that Evelyne, who does the cooking, is French-Combodian. If you come at a quiet day or stay late after dinner John, who is hosting the guests, sometimes likes to chat and may tell you more about their restaurant and its history.

In addition to the tapas, there are a changing Menú del dia, postres, and a good selection of wines. On my first visit, John told me not to take the highest price for the best quality and recommended one of the cheaper but no less tasty local wines. Much appreciated. And one of many reasons for getting back soon.
